Pennichuck Middle School
PTO MEETING MINUTES
January 2, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 7:07pm.
Motion to approve (M: K. Litch, S: D. Root) minutes of previous meeting were unanimously approved.

Principal’s Report
Little public information is available concerning the proposed upgrade to Henri Bourque Highway. It appears to be on the fast track. There will be a public hearing in Concord to discuss HB 1626, enabling legislation. Helen will draft a PTO letter to the District, as well as to local representatives regarding our concerns for the safety and well-being of our students. She will also invite Senator David Gottesman to an upcoming PTO meeting to discuss his views on the subject.

The budget process continues to move along. The Middle Level Instruction program packages should be completed by next week.

President’s Report
Limited responses were received from staff to the Wish List inquiry that was distributed last month. Helen will issue another inquiry and Paul will mention this at the faculty meeting next week. Once responses have been gathered we can publish this information in the newsletter and on the PTO webpage to generate donations.

Due to up-graded accounting practices, the district has instructed all school groups such as PTO’s to remove their funds from school-based Student Activity funds and establish their own accounts. Ed Hendry has allowed us a grace period in order for our group to establish a tax ID number and develop our own accounting process. Paul will check to see if school staff can actually maintain these books. We are looking for additional volunteers who may be interested in working on a budget/treasury committee.

The recent gift card fundraiser was a huge success. Over 60 families participated, purchasing more than 900 cards. Final profits have yet to be calculated as the incentive team breakfast has not been held to date but prior to breakfast expenses the fundraiser netted $1,206 in profits. Many thanks to Kathy Litch and Karen Hall for coordinating this effort.

Starting next month the PTO speaker series will resume. A representative of the Nashua Police Department will discuss gang-related activity in the city and what measures are being taken to address this matter.

Old Business
The School Store initiative is back to ground zero. The person who had indicated that he would build the cart has now indicated that he can not complete this project. We will continue searching for cart alternatives. We would appreciate any volunteers who may be able to build a rolling school store cart for us. If you can help, please contact Helen Honorow.

The Holiday Luncheon was a huge success. Many thanks to Diane Engelhart for chairing this event. The response from teachers was very positive and grateful. There was a tremendous supply of food and beverage yet the stock continually ran low. We need to make sure that we have more food for next year. It was discussed that next year consideration be given to staggering the amount of food available on the table to allow a more even distribution of food throughout the lunch periods.

New Business
Helen has been contacted regarding the conditions of the sidewalks leading to school. The DPW needs to hear from parents if there are concerns.

An End-of-Middle School culminating event, such as an 8th grade only dance, was discussed. It was determined that there is interest in promoting such an activity. A committee will be formed to look into the possibilities of the PTO or a group of parents plan and coordinate this event. Assistant Principal Lynne Joseph agreed to serve on this committee. Anyone interested in serving on such a committee should contact Helen Honorow.

Thom Horne is looking for parent volunteers to help manage the popcorn sales. Popcorn is sold on Fridays from 9:00 until 12:00. Interested volunteers should contact Deb Root or Anita Hazard.

Next Meeting
